Artist Statement “The figure has always been my muse. I get pleasure in seeing the transformation of paint strokes on the canvas slowly emerge into the soul of my subject. Immersed in a meditative moment in time, the figure emerges from the layers of paint becoming a new reality on the surface of my canvas. In this sense I see the act of painting as one of discovery, surrender and uncertainty. Painting, as my medium, is a gifted opportunity allowing me the means to better understand myself and communicate my feelings about my world. “A near death experience in water at age 6 has shaped Hodge’s life and art. It is no surprise that the water element is common in her paintings. “I spent much of my later childhood years overcoming my fear of water. I felt its healing ways as I simultaneously knew its power.” Her daughter’s love of water from an early age and emergence as an avid swimmer was another inspiration. “My figure is at one with the water, a caresser and emotional healer.”
